Factional fighting in the League of Social Democrats has escalated after it emerged the party had been registered as a limited company, and a new party name registered, without consulting members.A search of the Companies Registry shows The League of Social Democrats Limited was incorporated on December 10, with party vice-chairman Avery Ng Man-yuen and former party treasurer Pang Yee-kwong named as directors. The registration was noticed on Friday, when documents were posted on a website. The name "The New League of Social Democrats" was also registered.


Lawmaker Wong Yuk-man, the league's founding chairman, had no idea about the registrations and was outraged. He said members could take legal action.

But the executive committee led by league chairman Andrew To Kwan-hang said the moves were in line with the manifestos on which its leaders stood in internal elections. "The registration has nothing to do with all the disagreements," To said.
The controversy comes on the heels of a sex scandal and a failed attempt two months ago by members, led by Edward Yum Liang-hsien, to unseat To. In November, Yum backed a motion seeking to remove To as chairman, which was defeated 170-111 with 10 abstentions. Yum, 31, is widely regarded as a protege of Wong.

Ng said the registration of the league as a company was intended to help it become a systematic political party. "It is merely an administrative procedure and the executive committee has discussed it in detail."

He said he and other core members, with To's consent, registered "The New League of Social Democrats" name around the time of Yum's motion.

"I heard from sources that Chin Wai-lok and Edward Yum might set up a New League of Social Democrats. We decided to pre-empt them so that the league's name would not be used by another group," Ng said.

Chin, who is a Yum ally, denied this. "Ng is framing me ... I reserve my right to take legal action," he said.

Yum could not be reached for comment yesterday.
Party conflict became fodder for fresh public speculation after Wong criticised To's handling of a sex scandal involving Yum, who was arrested twice last month in connection with investigations into separate cases of rape and indecent assault. Yum is on bail and has not been charged.

Wong criticised leaders for keeping members in the dark. "We can sue them. Can anyone in the league just go to the Companies Registry and register a group under our name?" he said. "It is a mess. To Kwan-hang is unsuitable to lead the league."
